Plus Size Babydoll

Babydolls: your questions answered

There are few better forms of plus-size lingerie for looking and feeling fabulous, without revealing any more than you’re absolutely comfortable with, than the babydoll.

But it’s also easy to become confused about what exactly a babydoll is and why you may wear one – so with no further ado, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about them below.

What is a babydoll?

A babydoll is a short, loose-fitting nightgown or negligee that is generally intended for use as women’s nightwear. As its name suggests, it resembles the kind of garment you might expect to see on a literal ‘babydoll’, although of course, it’s also definitely in the territory of adult apparel.

Where did the babydoll come from?

American lingerie designer Sylvia Pedlar is credited with having invented the type of super-short nightgown we would now recognise as the babydoll, in response to World War II-era fabric shortages.

She didn’t, however, have much fondness for the name ‘babydolls’ for these garments, and therefore did not refer to them as such.

Why might I wear a babydoll?

Why wouldn’t you wear one? They’re a wonderful versatile form of lingerie, enabling you to easily conceal any supposed imperfections while still looking and feeling utterly sexy.

It’s no wonder, then, that plus-size ladies have so frequently turned in recent years to fuller-figure babydolls like the ones we stock here at Natural Curves. They’re just fabulously flattering pretty much regardless of who wears one, and it’s quite difficult to choose an unsuitable one.

What do I need to think about when choosing a babydoll?

As you’ll see when you peruse the Natural Curves babydoll range, an extensive range of styles is available to make it easy to find a babydoll that perfectly suits your tastes.

Nonetheless, there are various aspects of these fuller-figure babydolls that you might specifically consider. What about the sleeves, for example – do you want semi-sleeves, off-the-shoulder sleeves or no sleeves at all? You’ve got a lot of options in the breast area too, including underwire, push-up and ‘peekaboo’ treatments.

Babydolls also widely vary in terms of their body styles, with some being one-pieces, others being split down the middle, and some being waist-length or mid-thigh. Then, there’s the wide range of materials to consider – think the likes of sheer lycra or chiffon, opaque lycra, lace, silk and more.

Could I wear a babydoll on the street?

It might seem to be a bit of an ‘out there’ idea, but amid the recent ‘lingerie as outwear’ fashion trend, you might be tempted to pair some of the more conservative styles of babydoll with a pair of skinny jeans and a leather jacket. In any case, we’ll leave any such experimentations to you.

When you’re looking to add a few fuller-figured babydolls to your wardrobe, there’s no need to look further than the Natural Curves online store. Take a look through our range today, and you’ll be able to take advantage of highly attractive, often discounted prices for all manner of jaw-dropping babydolls, together with swift and reasonably priced delivery.

Is now a good time for plus size models, or a bad one?

As you might imagine given that plus size lingerie is our stock-in-trade here at Natural Curves, we certainly keep a close eye on the world’s catwalks, and the implications of what happens on them for the wider world of plus size fashion.

And let’s face it – if there’s any simple barometer for attitudes to plus size fashion around the globe, it’s the number of plus size models who’re actually walking those catwalks at any one time.

Great news! It seems there are more plus size models than ever…

First of all, let’s share the good news with you. As reported by HuffPost, a seasonal diversity report released for the recent New York Fashion Week disclosed that 68 plus size models walked a total of 19 shows for spring 2020 – quite a jump from the previous season, when 37 models walked in 12 shows.

Among those plus size models to hit the runway – and in the process, the headlines – was Tess Holliday, who turned heads for Chromat in a dress bearing the witty slogan, “sample size”. Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty show was another that showed the inclusivity of 2019 at its best, while Tommy Hilfiger and Zendaya’s show won similarly deserved rave reviews.

Oh, and we couldn’t possibly not mention Christian Siriano, who has established form as a sincere hero of inclusivity on the catwalks, and continued to live up to his pedigree in this regard.

…there was something a little troubling, though

Unfortunately, as good as such statistics may look on the surface, HuffPost’s Jamie Feldman recently pointed out that 41 of those aforementioned 68 models were cast in just three shows: Tommy, Chromat and Siriano. This meant the rest of the castings were solo or small groups – not quite an indication of the entire fashion world’s dedication to values of inclusivity.

The even worse news is that recent figures suggest even less progressive attitudes on our side of the Atlantic. Last season, for instance, saw not a single non-straight-size model walk in Milan, and while there were nine in Paris, seven of those walked in Tommy x Zendaya.

As Feldman has wisely asked: “When it comes to designers who we see, season after season, including just one plus-size model in the mix, I wonder how many more times we can see it happen before we take stock of what their inclusion actually means?

“Are they challenging the status quo because they are sick of it themselves, or are they doing it to create headlines and check a box? I’m not really sure anymore.”

There’s at least one place you can always depend on for plus size lingerie, though…

…and that place is, of course, Natural Curves! We’ve been all about embracing voluptuous physiques since 2006, and we’re not going anywhere any time soon.

Whether you are on the lookout for babydolls, bodysuits, hosiery, corsets, basques, shapewear or all manner of other plus size lingerie or related products to flatter the fuller figure, you can depend on finding the gorgeous items that perfectly match your preferences and needs when you shop with us.

Loving My New MEY Lingerie

My husband bought me some underwear from the ‘Mey lingerie’ collection and I was so delighted  with it that I had to write and give some feedback about how amazing it is.

He bought me the bra and matching knickers as well as the camisole – I have been trying for a long time to find a bra that looks good under a tight fitted top such as a long sleeved t-shirt and my gym tops – I have never had a bra that makes me feel supported but gives me such good shape at the same time – the Mey Spacer Bra has certainly done this – it is superbly comfortable too as well as extremely supportive and a really lovely shape!  The quality is fantastic  – it is extremely well made with nice thick straps.

I work in an office and wear a lot of camisole tops under my work jackets and suits – I find that after a while they start to look a bit stretched and worn and don’t quite sit properly – the Mey Cami Tops are made out of such lovely ‘soft to the touch’ material that you feel that you are wearing a second skin – I have them in both cream and natural colours and they are so classy – I have had so many comments at work when wearing them.  They are incredibly comfortable too and I often wear them under a blouse or shirt for an extra – they fit so well !

I can’t recommend Mey Lingerie highly enough ….it is classy, comfortable, stylish and extremely good quality!!
